I like photographing trees you see… I find it therapeutic almost. How could someone not be fascinated by it? Watch the light filter through..
Vineesh had been talking about his village, the plight of the farmers, the cunning of the local politicians, about aspirations.. We were walking through his village, a small island called Kaakkathuruthu in Allappey, Kerala. Here everybody knew all about everybody else’s life on the island. Down to the last detail of who lost which goat this week.
I was still staring at the beautifully lined trees which fenced a shack inside, when Vineesh said, “Those are poisonous. Those fruits can kill an adult. Have killed people on this island.”
“Why would you grow these, if you know it’s dangerous?”
“It’s a hassle to buy poison from a shop these days. Even for farmers. If you have made up your mind to die, you will die with or without the poison fruit. The village simply provides a cheaper alternative.”
I shivered and walked on.
